Where is “Greektown”?

Situated along Danforth Avenue with a western border at Hampton Avenue and the eastern border at Dewhurst Blvd. Toronto’s “Greektown” is the largest Greek neighbourhood in North America.  Sitting right next to Riverdale, another very desirable Toronto neighbourhood, Greektown is easily accessed via public transit, highway and numerous city streets.  Two TTC subway stations – Chester Station and Paper Station - service the neighbourhood.  Several main arteries run north and south off the Danforth allowing for the free flow of traffic while a number of parallel one-way streets help to “calm” the traffic flow for residents.  The Don Valley Parkway, Lakeshore Blvd. and Gardiner Expressways are all easily accessed from Greektown. The Danforth is very much a pedestrian friendly street with many residents choosing to walk across the Bloor Street Viaduct to Yonge & Bloor – one of Toronto’s most important business, shopping and entertainment hubs.

 The Neighbourhood

Greektown has GREAT energy.  Older homes and apartments on quiet, tree-lined streets sit just steps away from one of the most popular shopping and entertainment districts in Toronto.  Greektown residents and business owners are proud of their neighbourhood and actively promote their piece of the Danforth.  The Danforth Business Improvement Agency (BIA) is very organized, working with local business owners to ensure the street is safe and clean; planting trees and seasonal flowers to keep it beautiful.  The Greektown BIA hosts “Taste of the Danforth” every summer.  A popular Greek festival, “Taste of the Danforth” features entertainment and street performers, really cheap samples of Greek food, with the local shop keepers offering great deals to the thousands of people who visit each year.

The tree lined streets – Pape, Carlaw,  Arundel, Woodycrest and Jones – to name a few - feature many larger, older houses with a good mix of single and detached homes.  While there are no “high-rise” buildings in Greektown, apartments and condos sit atop many of the shops and restaurants along the main street.  Houses are older and well-kept with respectable-sized properties for homes so close to the center of the city.  Prices are a bit higher in this area making the Greektown neighbourhood most attractive for people looking for homes in the $500K plus range.

 What’s There?

Over 75 cafes, pubs and restaurants, with their busy sidewalk patios, are frequented by locals and tourists alike.  In the spring, summer and fall, strollers promenade up and down the avenue creating an exciting, friendly energy.  There is something for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Residents can pick up their groceries from a number of locally owned markets such as the Carrott Common, butcher shops and grocery stores like Loblaws or Sobeys both of which have stores on Broadview Avenue. The IGA on Danforth is another local favorite. The area is also well served with medical centres, banks, speciality stores.  There’s even something for the family cat and dog with pet supply stores and veterinary services dotting Danforth Avenue.

Families with children have access to public and private schools in the immediate area – Jackman Ave. Public School, Frankland Community School, Withrow Ave. Jr. School to name a few.  Also, due to its proximity to the Riverdale and East York neighbourhoods, residents can ultimately choose from over 20 elementary schools (3 of which are part of the Catholic Board) and 4 secondary schools. in the East York area.  The area is surrounded by parks with Riverdale Park to the south-west, Woodbine beach minutes to the south and an entry point to the Don Valley Ravine system just two blocks to the north-west. In addition to the medical and dental clinics located in the heart of Greektown, East York General Hospital sits just minutes away, one block north of the Danforth at Coxwell.

If you’re looking for a great, older home in a neighbourhood that combines quiet, tree-lined streets just steps away from one of Toronto’s most popular and eclectic dining, shopping and strolling avenues, you’re going to want to look at Greektown.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can help you find your perfect home in this great Toronto neighbourhood.
