Downtown West - Another Condo Hub
Less than ten years ago the south west end of the city - Toronto Downtown West - featured dozens of old, abandoned factories sitting next to the small, run down homes of the workers who actually worked in the factories. If you're looking for a condo you might want to take a look at the NEW Downtown West section of the city - fast becoming one of Toronto's most desirable neighbourhoods. The sheer number of new condominiums going up means that people looking for a Toronto condo will have unprecedented selection. In fact, there is more new condo construction in this small corner of our city than there is entire other Canadian cities. In all there are about 55 condo developments - 15,500 units - being built in the area bordered by Bloor in the north and Lakeshore to the south with an eastern border at University Avenue running west to Dufferin Street.
One of the attractions is the fact that this section of Toronto is reinventing itself - with many of the old restored warehouses and factories sitting next to newer, more modern developments. Some addresses of note include Thomson Residences at Bathurst and King, 755 King West and ART on Dovercourt Road, south of Queen Street West.
Demand is being driven by younger singles and couples however there is also a good representation of people in their forties, fifties and sixties. The mix of new and old, with many buildings sitting on rejuvenated, tree lines streets and easy access to the downtown core and major arteries such as Lakeshore Blvd and the Gardiner make this a very attractive area for younger people looking for their first home and boomers who have decided it's time to downsize. Also, these mixed-use neighbourhoods provide residents with an opportunity to live, work, play and shop all within steps from their homes.
Most of these developments are smaller, low rise and restored loft-style buildings, giving new condo buyers an opportunity to live close to the downtown core in a "neighbourhood" instead of on the 50th floor of a high-rise.
