 CabbagetownV2

Cabbagetown is located in the heart of downtown Toronto at the corner of Parliament and Carlton Streets.  Its current boundaries extend to Gerrard Street in the south, Wellesley Street to the north, with a western boundary at Sherborne Street.  Its eastern boundary is the Don River.  This eclectic neighbourhood features an impressive number of lovingly restored Victorian homes that date back to the time when the area’s earliest residents were primarily poor immigrants from Ireland and Macedonia.  The name “Cabbagetown” is said to have derived from the fact that many of these families grew their own vegetables in their front gardens. Once considered a “slum” Cabbagetown is now a designated “Heritage Conservation District”.

 Map of Cabbagetown

Cabbagetown is one of the Toronto’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. Residents are very proud of their community and make a point of supporting the many locally owned businesses that flourish in the area.  Restaurant, cafes, pubs and coffee shops to suit every taste – from Mexican, Indian & Halal to Chinese, Japanese, or “pub grub” - line the streets.  The variety and quality of food and entertainment coupled with the many small local hotels and B&B’s make this area a very popular destination for people from across the GTA.   The neighbourhood’s unique character has made walking tours a very popular pastime.  Annual events such as the Cabbagetown Festival and the Cabbagetown Film Festival bring even more excitement to this high-energy neighbourhood.

 Parliament Street

Well served by the TTC with easy access to the Lakeshore and Gardiner Expressway, Cabbagetown is also within walking distance to the downtown business district.  Local business owners formed their own “BIA” which actively promotes local businesses, entertainers, festivals and events.  Also in the area, Allan Gardens and Riverdale Park and Farm bring a bit of nature to this urban neighbourhood.

Cabbagetown, with its lovingly restored older homes, their beautifully tended gardens and mature trees, is particularly popular with younger professionals, smaller families and “empty nesters”.  Developers, intent on maintaining the eclectic feel of the neighbourhood, are renovating older buildings to create unique and highly sought after open loft and condo spaces.   Popular new Cabbagetown condos include 10 Sword Street, the nine-unit loft “Peanut Factory” and 289 Sumach Street – each lovingly restored to incorporate the best of the “old” with the best of the “new”.

If you want to live in a real “community” in the centre of the city you have to take a walk through Cabbagetown.  Even better – let me help you find your perfect Cabbagetown Home.
